Aubrey Beardsley : Art Noveau

Designer : Aubrey Beardsley
Period : Art Noveau
Country : England
Year : 1872-1898?

The cat atop the woman's head in this design is interesting in that it is not a realistic depiction of a cat at all. It is almost frightening in the way that it stares down the viewer. It is ready to chomp down on anyone who nears the woman with closed eyes. The woman seems like a gypsy that is meditating and the inner part of the cat is somehow connected with her meditation methods. This work was done for a compilation of short stories by Edgar Allen Poe and it certainly depicts his own style in its own dark form.

Cashback : 2006

Cashback

The designer of this poster utilizes a motion to create depth in this poster. The girl in the forefront is frozen in time while it seems that she had once been moving because of the blurred background.

GATTACA : 24 October 1997

This poster of GATTACA is one of my personal favorites. The designer displays an excellent balance between the text and the photos. The message is simple yet extremely explanatory of the movie's plot.

In Harm's Way : 6 April 1965

In Harm's Way poster exhibits a balance of color in that there are reversals of the same image repeated yet smaller at the bottom of the poster. There also seems to be a direction to the right that could indicate "Harm's Way."

Designer: Saul Bass

All Quiet on the Western Front : 21 April 1930

There is a distinct contrast between his face and helmet and the rest of his body which is placed in shadows. The expression on the face of the soldier focuses the viewer's eyes onto the soldier.
